When you are installing a new water heater, first off, you want to be sure that it is one that has a high efficiency level. This means you should probably be looking for a water heater that has an EnergyStar label. Once you have picked your water heater, it is important to know of these three other ways that you can save on the water heater annually:

Insulating with a Blanket:

When you purchase your new water heater, be sure to also purchase a blanket for it. This "blanket" will insulate the water heater so that the hot water stored inside of the tank is continuously hot. If the water heater isn't insulated, then hot water can easily be lost through the water heater's walls. Just be sure that you leave cut out spaces in the blanket so that you are able to see manufacturer data on the water heater, the thermostat, and more. 

Install Low-Flow Showerhead: 

One of the biggest areas that you use hot water in your home is when you shower. If you have an older showerhead, then a great deal of water loss will take place and you will end up spending more money on your water bill each month. When you install a low-flow showerhead, the amount of water loss can be reduced by almost half. When you save on the water loss, you are also saving on the heating loss. So be installing a low-flow showerhead, you also save about $100 per year on heating costs.

Insulate the Water Pipes:

When you turn the hot water on from anywhere in the home whether it be when you run the washing machine, the sink or the shower, the hot water from the water tank will have to travel out of the tank, through the water pipes, and to the appliance that you are running. When the hot water is traveling from the pipes, you want to be sure that it stays hot. If the pipes are not insulated, it can take longer for the water to heat up once it reaches the appliance that you are running. So be sure that when you have a new water heater installed, you are also insulating the pipes that are installed, as well.
