If you have decided to purchase a new, lit sign for your building, you are probably excited about increasing the visibility of your store to anyone passing by it at night. This could lead to more people seeing your store and coming in to check it out, likely increasing sales. However, you first have to overcome the hurdle of installing the sign. Here are some tips for getting your outdoor lit sign installed.

1. Check Zoning Requirements

Your first step is to check the zoning requirements of your locality. You need to be absolutely sure that your sign meets all of the safety, height, and aesthetic requirements of your community or else you are going to be forced to take it down, modify it, and perhaps pay a fine. You can find the zoning requirements by checking the website of your local government or by contacting the planning committee for your area.

2. Figure Out Where You're Going to Put the Outlet Box

In order for power to be supplied to your sign, you are going to need to figure out some way to connect it to the electrical grid. This is going to require you to install an outlet box, if there is not one outside of your building already. You will likely need to have a professional installation company come to install the box. You can contact your electrical supplier to see if they will be able to install it for you, or you can find a company that specializes in installing signs. The reason why you want to get a professional involved in this part of the project is because you will likely need to drill a hole in the exterior of your building. This could cause structural damage if not done correctly, so if you want to avoid repair bills, you need to make sure that it is done by someone who knows exactly what they are doing.

3. Use a Strong Plywood Base If Attaching Your Sign to a Wall

If you are going to attach your lit sign to a wall, you need to be sure that you have a base to give it some extra stability and to more evenly distribute the weight of the sign to not cause structural damage. Be sure that you purchase treated wood that is designed to be used outside so that you know that your base will be able to withstand the wind and the rain.
